These are big roaches found in this area. They are dark brown to black in color. Some people refer to them as water bugs. They are about 1” to 1 1/4” in size. They have long antennae, and non-functional wings, which are visible from the top.
These insects are very nocturnal and spend most of their time hiding in cracks and crevices. They prefer moist areas and small spaces without much light. This makes them very hard to find and even more difficult to control. They are generally introduced into homes and businesses through foundation cracks, expansion joints, under siding or through gaps in foundation that allow utilities to enter. They will eat a variety of things from starches, decaying organic material to garbage.
Prevention through good sanitation and fixing structural issues will help prevent this insect from being able to infest a home/business. On the exterior, make sure you don’t have any gaps or other entry points to the inside. Removing clutter, keep garage refuse away from structure and removing high grass/weeds around the exterior will help with this insect as well as other pests.
On the inside, we will pay special attention to the basement, as this is generally has the most moisture in the home. We will treat around the floor joists and also around the perimeter of the basement floor. On the exterior, we will treat around the perimeter of the home, under siding, around pipe and wire entrances, and areas of dense vegetation to create a barrier that will prevent them from entering in the first place. Our regular service programs will maintain this barrier year round to keep these and other unwanted pests out.
