These are very small insects. They are grayish in color and are often confused with fleas because of their ability to jump. However, these little guys do not bite and are considered a nuisance pest.
Springtails are commonly found in early to late spring. They feed on plants and grasses. They tend to infest healthy lawns that get regular water and fertilizer promoting plants growth which they feed upon. Do to their small size, they can gain entry into an home/business no matter how well it is sealed. These pests are harmless once inside a building and will quickly die.
Prevention starts with modifications made to the exterior. Create a rock or mulch barrier between the foundation and grass. Don’t over water or over fertilize plants around the home. Make sure all down spouts are funneling water way from the house. Running a dehumidifier in the basement will make it very hard for these insect to get out of hand as they easily die from desiccation.
On the inside, we will pay special attention to entry points in the home. We will focus on windows & doors, basements and water source areas. On the exterior, we will treat around the perimeter of the home, under siding, around pipe and wire entrances, and areas of dense vegetation to create a barrier that will prevent them from entering in the first place. Our regular service programs will maintain this barrier year round to keep these and other unwanted pests out.
