Protecting Your Home From Ants

This spring we’re ready to hit the ballgames, spend afternoons at the park, and plan backyard barbecues. But this time of year also draws out the ants. And let us tell you, they’re no picnic.

Protect your family and friends from the harmful bacteria that ants, flies, cockroaches, rodents, and birds can spread by practicing a few easy steps before, during, and after your outdoor meals. It’s time to think about pest control. St. Louis-based Blue Chip has all the tips

Watch the barbecue sauce

Did you know ants and stinging insects are highly attracted to sugar? That’s why all of the common ingredients in most picnics or barbecues summon these pests. Foods such as sauces, marinades, cake frosting—even spilled soda—will draw them out in hordes. But any garbage or waste will draw cockroaches and rodents, so be careful.

Ant Infestation Preparation

It’s a wrap!

An easy way to ward off these pesky pests and stop their contamination of your food is to cover and wrap everything in plastic or foil before and after cooking.

Avoid accidental cross-contamination

Use separate utensils, cutting boards, and storage containers for raw meat, fish, and eggs. Try designating one type of cutting board for meat (let’s say a clear plastic) and another type for vegetables (a colored cutting board).

The thermometer is your friend

Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 145 degrees for whole meats and 160 degrees for ground meat? For poultry: 165 degrees.

Scrub, scrub, scrub

Of course washing hands is essential any time you prepare food, but don’t forget the surfaces. Wash utensils, countertops and cutting boards with hot, soapy water or other appropriate cleansers; rinsing with just water won’t cut it. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and running water—and don’t forget under your nails and between your fingers.

Refrigerate leftovers and enjoy!

In warm weather, you need to refrigerate leftovers promptly. Never thaw or marinate food on the counter or in the sink. Do so in the refrigerator.

Now you’re all set to enjoy those outdoor gatherings this season! Remember that we can’t see or smell or even taste harmful bacteria. But consistent sanitation practices will prevent pests from becoming a problem in and around your home. Don’t forget to stay on top of those leftover bottles and garbage throughout your next party, cleaning up crumbs and spills, and frequently emptying the garbage or recycle bins. Most importantly, enjoy!
